New York University Muslim and Christian students will gather together for a two-day workshop on one of their strongest commonalities: prayer. The event will be held on from November 14-November 16 at the Kimmel Center and Thompson Center. Following a schedule built around the Muslim daily prayer times, participants will engage in dialogue and prayer together as they celebrate their differences and build on their common beliefs.
The event will be co-facilitated by internationally known meditation teacher Fr. Laurence Freeman, OSB, spiritual director of the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM); Imam Khalid Latif, Islamic Chaplain at NYU; Fr. Vincent De Lucia, Catholic Chaplain at NYU; and Rev. Susan Field, Protestant Chaplain at NYU. Participants will be taught the basics of meditation and yogic movement.
This event is co-sponsored by the NYU Center for Spiritual Life which is a multifaith initiative to enhance the educational experience by fostering a community of scholars who support religious expression, leadership, integrity, mutual respect and open dialogue. The Way of Peace Dialogues series began in 1996 as an outreach effort of the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM). Presenters have included the Dalai Lama, the theologian Richard Rohr, and the contemplative teacher Fr. Thomas Keating. A previous Muslim/Christian Dialogue in this series was held in the UK at the University of York in 2006.
This event is made possible in part by a grant form the Trust for the Meditation Process. There is no fee for participation. Registration is open to the public, but priority will be given to NYU students.
