Dear Friends,
It's time! "A Son's Sacrifice" is coming to your living room this week as part of the PBS national series " Independent Lens"!
Did you miss "A Son's Sacrifice" at one of the 25+ festivals and university screenings? Do you have a close friend (or massive mailing list) who would love to see the film? Now is the time to watch it along with 1,000,000 other Americans! Tune in to see Academy Award-nominated actor Terrence Howard (Crash, Hustle & Flow) introduce the film and name-drop Yoni and Musa.
Most cities will broadcast the film on Tuesday, January 22, at 10PM. However, there are many exceptions, such as NYC (12:30AM on Jan 26) and DC (12:30AM on Jan 27). The best idea is to check the air date using your zipcode because some stations are replaying it several times.
Own the DVD:
Since the TV version is three minutes shorter than our festival version, you can also order the DVD very soon. Check our web site next week after the broadcast to order you own one-of-a-kind version, complete with artful packaging. There will also be an iTunes version this spring for your ipod or i-whatever.
Festivals & More:
"A Son's Sacrifice" continues to have an ambitious festival
run. Musa and Yoni travelled to Tehran to screen the film at the
"Cinema Verite" Iran International Documentary Film Festival in
October. Their experience in the Islamic Republic of Iran will be the subject
of an upcoming TV documentary by LinkTV. See Yoni's photos from Iran here.
In December, the film won the International Documentary Association's (IDA) award for Best Documentary Short at their gala in Los Angeles.
This winter and spring "A Son's Sacrifice" will screen in Croatia (at ZagrebDox), Greece (at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival), San Francisco (at the San Francisco Int'l Asian American Film Festival), Washington DC (at the Council of Foundations Festival, where it won a Henry Hampton Award) in addition to universities including Connecticut College and UCLA. Check out our news page for updates and screening times if you'll be near any of these cities.
New Projects: "Bronx Princess" & "The Calling"
Yoni and Musa are hard at work collaborating on two new films for ITVS/PBS. "Bronx Princess" is about a 17-year-old girl from the Bronx who journeys back to Ghana, West Africa to confront her father, a newly crowned tribal chief. We shot the film over the summer in the South Bronx and at the family's palace in Ghana. We're in the midst of editing now with Mary Manhardt (A Son's Sacrifice, Streetfight, American Teen).
We're also co-directing the Jewish and Muslim stories of "The Calling", a groundbreaking 4-hour PBS documentary that explores the lives of clergy students from different faiths. We're spending over a year closely documenting students who are facing dramatic choices as they become religious leaders. Both projects are tremendously exciting to us because they explore the themes of family, faith, and tradition that we began in "A Son's Sacrifice".
Thanks to all of our supporters who have made the success of "A Son's Sacrifice" possible!
Sincerely,
Yoni Brook
